India is a vast South Asian country which is exceptionally rich and diverse in history, culture, and landscapes. From Himalayan peaks to Indian Ocean coastline, incredible forts and palaces, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and relaxing beaches, one can experience a wide range of unique places and adventures in India. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized 36 World Heritage Sites in India. These heritage sites range from forts and palaces to temples and churches to national parks. Among these 36 World Heritage Sites, India has “Taj Mahal” which is also recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Taj Mahal is an immense mausoleum of white marble, built in Agra by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife. The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world. Other heritage palaces include Humayun’s Tomb – the first tomb with several innovations, Qutb Minar and its Monuments, Red Fort complex, Group of Monuments at Hampi, Group of Monuments at Pattadakal, Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, Khajuraho Group of Monuments at Madhya Pradesh, Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, Elephanta Caves, Agra Fort, Hill Forts of Rajasthan, etc. It is not only the monuments and forts which comes under the World Heritage Sites, but India also has Mountain Railways such as Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Kalka-Shimla Railway. The national parks include The Great Himalayan National Park, Sunderbans National Park, Nalanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks. The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Mountains, is a mountain range along the western side of India and one of the world’s ten “Hottest biodiversity hotspots.” The Historic City of Ahmedabad presents a rich architectural heritage is also counted as one the World Heritage Sites.
India includes not only the above-listed heritage sites; it has much more to explore. Every different state in India is like every different country. To explore this diversified beauty, one needs to witness everything through one’s eyes.
